I love when I am inspired to make a recipe!

I love when that inspiration comes at the oddest time (8:30pm on a Saturday Night!)

I love when the product of that inspiration is this chocolately good!

Tips for making this smoothie bowl

– If you can, use frozen avocado.  Cut avocado into half (use an avocado that is at the peak of its freshness) and lightly brush with lemon juice. Place in Ziploc bags and write the date.  Let it freeze overnight before using in a smoothie

– Use a frozen banana and not fresh because you want to keep the texture silky smooth without using ice cubes.

– For garnish, I used chocolate syrup.

– Once you have made the smoothie, refrigerate it for about 20 minutes, if you have the patience (I didn’t!).  It tastes much better when its a little cold

– Use smooth peanut butter because it will make the smoothie very silky

Answering Common Questions

Can I use cocoa powder instead of chocolate in my smoothie?

You can use cocoa powder, sure. But, it doesn’t add any protein content to the recipe. It’s just mostly sugar.

What is the best blender to use for making chocolate smoothies?

You want a smoothie blender that can handle tough ingredients like ice cubes. Also, choose something with dual blades. I love this (Affiliate Link) Ninja BL610.

Can I make a vegan chocolate smoothie?

Yes, it’s very easy to make a vegan chocolate smoothie. Swap dairy milk for almond or hazelnut milk. Also, swap honey for agave or maple syrup. If you are confused about what ingredients are vegan, check out my complete guide to vegan food.

How do you thicken chocolate smoothie?

Adding protein powders or Greek yogurts can thicken a smoothie. Also, use frozen bananas and avocados to thicken your smoothie.

Vegan protein powder

For this recipe, I had used Juice Plus+ Complete Dutch Chocolate powder. This product no longer available, but you can use any vegan chocolate powder.

The best part about using a protein powder is that it acts like a flour! So, you don’t need to add any flours to baking recipes. Get your protein fix by making these flourless chocolate protein brownies.

These chocolate smoothie is so satiating and it packs a good protein punch. It can be a quick lunch or a post-workout snack. Try any one of these vegan chocolate powders that are responsibly sourced, non-gmo and organic.

What are some good toppings for chocolate smoothie?

This chocolate smoothie is perfect by itself and needs no toppings!

But, in the world of food photography where we eat with our eyes first, a simple bowl with only chocolate smoothie is not drool-worthy no matter how delicious it tastes!

Add any ingredient that you like on this smoothie.  Come back and tell me what you added to it.  I am always fascinated to see how my readers change up my recipes.

Matcha powder

I love the green color of Matcha powder, but, its so delicious in everything, like pancakes, sparkling water or Tzatziki.  In this smoothie bowl, Matcha adds a different flavor layer

Strawberries

In this smoothie, strawberries are just there to look pretty.  They bring a ton of antioxidant power to this smoothie bowl!  You can always make strawberry dressing out of any leftover strawberries or a Greek yogurt bowl.

Hemp seeds

Did you know that hemp seeds are a complete protein for vegans? I added hemp seeds inside the chocolate peanut butter smoothie, but, they are just to pretty to be hidden.  Remember how pretty they looked in my Amaranth Tabouli Recipe?

Chia seeds

Chia seeds nutrition and black color are the perfect contrast for this smoothie. They also happen to be a complete vegan protein source. I also used them in my Mandarin Orange smoothie

Pepitas

Pepitas add a nice green color to this recipe and a nice crunch.  They are also packed with zinc and iron. It was a good thing that I had some left over from my vegan paella recipe so I could top it in this smoothie.

I have even made ice cream with these flavors. Have you tried this Ninja Creami protein ice cream recipe? It’s a very delicious ice cream recipe that is not just empty calories.
